Since Hollywood is in a movie reboot/remake mood these days, one movie that should be at the top of their list is The Bodyguard. Twenty-four years ago, Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston made this blockbuster movie that captured the hearts of the world. In this tale about a tough guy protecting a hard to handle, popstar diva, the chemistry and frustration between the two makes for a movie that fans can watch again and again.
According to Wikipedia, Warner Brothers announced the possibility of a remake in 2011 where Rihanna’s name was floated. Since that time Rihanna has rejected playing the role.
I think Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston is a very hard act to follow. Whitney’s music alone would be difficult to match. There is such a high bar for anyone attempting to play those roles that I just don’t see how a remake would be successful unless you change the gender of the roles. The bodyguard would be played by a woman and the popstar played by a man. There are several combinations that would make a very entertaining movie. For a mature audience Hillary Swank could be Francine Farmer and Jamie Foxx could be the bad boy music star, Ray Marron. Hillary Swank has played her share of tough girls and Jamie Foxx could definitely pull off the music and bad boy mistique.
If Warner Brothers wants to try to capture a younger audience they could cast the Avenger’s Scarlett Johanssen as the bodyguard and Usher Raymond as the live hard, die young pop star. What do you think? Share your thoughts (See infographic below). Tweet them with #RemakeTheBodyguard
