Mýa: Hard Work Equals Longevity

Mýa

Platinum selling artist, Mýa explains the importance of hard work to EZ Street of 93.9 WKYS, "The importance of the grind and the work is for longevity...It's hard playing a game of catch-up if you don't do your homework...If you do the legwork, that's like a cushion that will take you anywhere you want to go. There is always room to grow, but that legwork will definitely keep you in something a lot longer and you can remain stable and take care of people financially. Also teach and pass the torch."Mýa's Path to Success and Longevity in The Music Business

  1. Mýa practiced privately until she was ready to come out (with friends, in school plays and the gospel choir).

  2. With the help of her parents, Mýa created professional demos (save money and invest in yourself).

  3. Mýa learned about the recording process and how to write songs while creating demos.

  4. The demos Mýa and her parents created were shopped around. Mýa didn't rest on her talent.

  5. Mýa was signed to an independent label, University Music, in DC after signing live for the label owner, Haqq Islam.

  6. Mýa recorded more demos for University Music, and those demos where presented to major labels.

  7. In 1998, Mýa signed to Interscope Records as a test or tryout. This is typical of many new artists. Even if you're a great singer and performer, there is no guarantee that the music will sell.

  8. Mýa's first 2 albums were certified platinum: Mýa, Fear of Flying; The third album, Moodring was certified gold.

  9. Mýa became an independent artist in 2008 founding Planet 9, and learned much more about the music business and music production.

  10. Since music was her first love, Mýa never let any issues destroy her love for music.
